Auto dealership service bays sit at an interesting intersection. They are working spaces, with the same daily cycle counts and impact exposure as any commercial garage. They are also customer-facing, increasingly designed to bring the showroom aesthetic into the back of house where customers can see their vehicle being serviced.
This dual role drives the door selection. The wrong choice gets it half right and disappoints on the other half. The right choice handles both.
What service bays are actually doing
Modern service bays at a mid-sized dealership are running:
- 50 to 100 door cycles per service day, sometimes higher at high-volume dealerships
- A mix of light passenger vehicles and heavier light-truck volume
- Bay-to-bay vehicle movement throughout the day, which means impact risk
- Customer visibility through the bay, either by design or because the customer waiting area looks into service
The door has to keep working under that pattern, and look good doing it.
The glass argument
Full-vision aluminum-and-glass doors transform a service area visually. The natural light coming through the panels reduces interior lighting load during the day, the daylight makes the bay feel like an extension of the showroom, and customers waiting in the lounge get visual confirmation that work is happening on their vehicle.

The trade-off with glass is impact tolerance. A hard bumper hit on a tempered glass panel can shatter the panel. The cost of a replacement panel is real, and the downtime is real. For service bays with a known impact risk pattern, glass needs to be paired with the appropriate door positioning.
The polycarbonate argument

A Ford dealership we worked with in 2023 in northeastern Wisconsin took this approach on their service center build. The pattern we see at well-designed dealerships is to mix the two. Customer-facing service entrances use full-vision glass for showroom continuity. Internal bays and heavier service stalls use polycarbonate. The hardware package is matched to the exposure of each bay rather than treated uniformly across the building.
This costs slightly more in spec coordination at the design phase. It saves significantly in long-term operations because each door is right-sized for what it does.
Hardware package decisions
Whatever panel material you choose, the hardware package determines how the door wears. For service bays, the standard considerations:
- Roller specification affects cycle smoothness and noise level. Customer-facing bays benefit from premium roller specifications for quieter operation

Lead time and rollout
For new dealership construction, door specifications usually need to land four to six weeks before the install date to fit standard production. Custom finish work, including matching brand colors on the powdercoat service, adds lead time but is often worth it for the customer-facing bays.
