Most new car wash builds end up choosing between two door styles for the bay openings: a polycarbonate panel door like our Survivor line, or a full-vision aluminum-and-glass door like our UltraClear line. Both work in a wash environment. They solve the problem differently, and they age differently.
This article walks through how the two materials hold up to the conditions a commercial car wash door actually sees, and how operators should think about the trade-offs when speccing a new bay.
What the bay does to a door
A typical commercial car wash bay puts a door through more cycles in a single year than a residential overhead door sees in its full life. That alone changes the engineering. Add the chemistry, presoak alkalines, low-pH wheel cleaners, hot rinse water with chloramine, and waxes and sealants in the dry-off zone, and the surface load on the panel and the hardware adds up fast.
The two materials respond to that environment differently.
Polycarbonate panels
Polycarbonate is essentially an industrial-grade clear plastic, engineered for impact resistance. The panel is light, it absorbs hits instead of denting, and it holds up to repeated washdown cycles without pitting or oxidizing the way aluminum or coated steel will.
In a wash bay, polycarbonate carries three real-world advantages:
- Impact behavior. A tunnel conveyor or a self-serve bay sees the occasional bumper contact. Polycarbonate flexes and recovers. A steel panel takes a permanent dent. A glass panel breaks.
- Daylight transmission. Translucent polycarbonate lets in enough natural light that interior lighting can be reduced during daytime hours, which matters for operators running long shifts.
- Weight. Lower panel weight means less stress on hardware, less torque on the operator, and longer cycle life from the same components.
Polycarbonate is the right call when the bay sees high cycle counts, when operators are sensitive to recovery cost after impact events, or when daylight is part of the customer experience.
Full-vision glass
A full-vision glass door uses an aluminum frame with tempered glass panels. The result is a clear door that reads more like a storefront than an overhead door.
Glass is the right call when:
- The door is part of a showroom or customer-facing facade
- Image and curb appeal are commercial drivers, like a flagship wash near a high-traffic intersection
- The bay sees lighter cycle counts and impact risk is low
UltraClear doors run on the same aluminum-frame hardware platform as a commercial storefront, with options that hold up well in a wash environment. They are not a fit for the highest-exposure bays, but they are a strong choice for entry bays, retail-adjacent washes, and dealer service bays where presentation matters as much as durability.
We worked with a four-bay self-serve operator in central Minnesota who wanted a UltraClear front bay for street visibility from a busy corridor, with Survivor polycarbonate on the three back bays where the heavy tunnel traffic runs. Two years in, the front bay is still pulling additional walk-in traffic the owner attributes to the visible interior, and the back bays are running their normal cycle without panel issues. That mixed spec is a common pattern when curb appeal and high-cycle reliability are both on the table.
How they age
A polycarbonate panel installed in 2010 can still be in service today with no panel replacements, only hardware refreshes. The panels themselves are largely immune to the chemistry they encounter and the surface stays clear with normal washing.
Glass panels do not corrode either, but the seals, the frame, and the hardware around them carry more of the wear. The hardware package matters more here than on a polycarbonate door, and operators should plan for periodic seal and hinge service.
For both materials, the bottleneck for door longevity is rarely the panel. It is the hardware around it. Which leads to the next point.
Hardware matters more than panel choice
Whatever panel you choose, the corrosion package on the hardware is what determines how the door lives in a wash environment. Galvanized track and standard rollers will rust out fast in a chlorinated bay. Stainless hardware and properly specified rollers will not.
Our stainless steel hardware package and Magnum stainless rollers are the difference between a door that needs hardware service every couple of years and one that runs for a decade.
Bottom line
For most commercial wash bays, polycarbonate is the safer pick because it forgives impact, takes the chemistry without complaint, and runs lighter on the operator. Full-vision glass is the right call when the door is part of the customer-facing identity of the wash and the cycle count and impact exposure are reasonable.
